Rustic Sultanabad is the working term for the village dialect of the larger Sultanabad tradition, a vocabulary built around weak madder, undyed cream wool, and a softly drawn vine repeat that lets the irregularities of the loom and the dye bath read as part of the composition rather than as flaw. The drawing carried in this rug sits firmly inside that village language, with a quiet medallion implied rather than fixed and a single guard band closing the border.

Three weavers shared the loom in India for roughly six months. Around 1.6 million Persian-asymmetric knots were tied by feel against a vertical beam, the wool drawn from a long-staple New Zealand fleece chosen because it lifts plant dye to the soft tones the rustic palette requires. Madder root, fermented indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull provided the entire colour vocabulary, with each bath matured in copper vats for two to three weeks before the skein was lowered.

The composition

A faded madder ground carries an all-over vine in cream and soft indigo, with the pattern thickening toward an implied centre. The drawing is loose and confident rather than tight and precise, which is the village dialect at its best. A single deep guard band closes the border without crowding the field. The colour will keep moving for a decade. The madder lightens into terracotta, the cream warms into bone, and the indigo deepens slowly toward navy in the deeper passes.

What you are buying

Rustic Sultanabad carpets with this scale and dye discipline trade at international auction between twenty and forty-five thousand dollars when honest examples appear. This is a new weaving in the same village tradition, in the same fibre, on the same loom geometry at the same density. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating, a property no other floor object carries.

The piece in a room

8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) sits naturally beneath the front edge of a sectional or under a six-to-eight seater dining table. The faded madder palette pairs with walnut, oak, oxidised brass, and leather, and welcomes mid-tone painted walls. The looser village drawing reads beautifully in a room with imperfect plaster and exposed beams as well as in a more polished setting.

Conservation

Rotate a half turn every six months so light and traffic age the wool evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction alone, beater bar disengaged. Blot any spill at once with a clean cotton cloth and cool water. A wool-trained conservator should hand-wash the rug every five years. The piece runs ninety years on a domestic floor with that care.

Day-to-day care

  • Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
  • Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
  • Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.

Deep cleaning

  • Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
  • Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
  • For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.

Storage

  • Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
  • Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
  • Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked

How long will shipping take?

Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.

Will the colour exactly match the photo?

Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.

Can I get a sample before buying?

Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.

What is your returns process?

Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.

Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?

COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
