The vegetable-dyed Sultanabad tradition holds a particular place in the history of the carpet trade because it is the line that taught the West how to live with Persian weaving. By the 1880s, dealers in central Iran had pushed weavers to open up the dense, busy fields of classical court work into the airy ivory grounds and loose vine repeats that drawing rooms in London and New York wanted. The Classic Styles Vegetable Dyes carpet in front of you carries that lineage into a contemporary Indian workshop.
Roughly four months at the loom for two to three weavers, working from an open cartoon drawn in graphite and corrected in ink. New Zealand wool was lowered into copper vats of madder root, indigo, oak gall, and walnut hull that had matured for two to three weeks before each immersion. Around one and a half million Persian-asymmetric knots make up the field.
The composition
An ivory ground carries a loose vine repeat in soft rust, walnut, and dropped indigo. There is no central medallion, no insistent border, just an even distribution of botanical drawing across the entire field. Vegetable colour does not stay still. Over a decade the ivory warms to bone, the rust softens to terracotta, and the indigo deepens at the guard bands. A vegetable Sultanabad arrives ready to begin its life rather than finished on the day of delivery.
What you are buying
Pre-1920 Sultanabads at this size with comparable colour and condition trade at the major auction houses for twenty to forty thousand US dollars when they appear at all. This is a new weaving on the same kind of loom, in the same fibre, to the same dye protocol. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is a property no machine-made or chemical-dyed alternative can offer.
The piece in a room
6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) settles into a primary seating area or a six-seat dining set. The ivory field opens up small flats and apartments without claiming the room. Cream walls and oak floors hold the palette in balance. Brass, walnut, and undyed linen all read cleanly above the rug.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly, suction only. Rotate end-to-end at the change of seasons. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. A wool conservator should hand-wash the carpet every five to seven years. With these habits the rug runs eighty to one hundred years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
