This 2'6" x 24' (76 x 732 cm) Ziegler-tradition runner was hand-knotted in India by a single weaver across roughly seven months of continuous work. The loom was set with a beam long enough to wind off the completed sections as the weaver progressed. The wool is hand-spun and the dyes are vegetable, with the beige and rust palette built from oak gall, walnut hull, and madder. The foundation is cotton, double-wefted to give the runner the structural memory it needs to lie flat for decades.

The composition

A soft beige ground over which an open palmette and vine repeat runs in warm rust and faded indigo. The half-drop pattern means the eye reads the rhythm in the first metre and accepts the full twenty-four feet as a single composition. The border is a single guard band, narrow enough to keep the field as the protagonist. Subtle abrash variations from one dye batch to the next give the length its natural punctuation.
