The Ziegler design tradition, with its open palmette and vine ground, was originally developed for room-size carpets, but the same drawing translates beautifully to runner format because the repeat survives any length.

This 2'6" x 20' (76 x 610 cm) runner was hand-knotted in India by a single weaver over roughly six months. A runner of this length is wound onto the beam of a vertical loom and unwound as the work progresses, which means the weaver works on perhaps three feet of visible field at any one time and has to carry the colour memory of the design for the full length. The wool is hand-spun and the foundation is cotton, double-wefted to keep the runner straight.

The composition

A warm beige ground holds an open palmette and vine repeat in soft rust and aged indigo. The drawing is half-drop and the eye finds the rhythm in the first three feet, then settles in for the remaining seventeen. The border is a single restrained band that follows the runner for its full length without competing with the field. The slight abrash from one dye batch to the next gives the runner natural breaks.

Rotate the runner end-for-end once a year so the foot traffic distributes evenly along the length. Vacuum weekly on suction only, beater bar off. Blot spills with clean cotton, never rub. Hand wash by a wool-trained conservator every five to seven years. With proper care, a runner of this construction will run sixty to eighty years of household traffic without losing its body.
