Persian floral weaving on an ivory ground belongs to a long city tradition that runs from the Safavid courts of the sixteenth century through to the present-day workshops that weave for serious collectors. The vocabulary is consistent across that line, palmettes, arabesques, scrolling vine, and a measured central medallion, and the colour discipline is hard-earned. Two to three weavers spent close to four months at the cartoon. The composition is curvilinear rather than squared, which means the master cartoon is read line by line and translated into the Persian-asymmetric knot at densities that allow the curves to remain curves rather than collapsing into stairs. New Zealand wool was chosen for the pile because it accepts the soft jewel tones the floral palette requires.

The composition

An ivory field carries a central medallion in soft rust, with corner spandrels and a layered border in muted blue, green, and ochre. The floral drawing is dense enough to reward close reading and quiet enough to read as a unified field at room scale. As the wool ages the ivory will move to bone and the jewel tones will deepen, which is the trajectory that distinguishes a hand-knotted floor from a printed copy.

Equivalent pre-1930 city Persian carpets of this size and condition trade at international auction at twenty-five thousand US dollars and upward, and ivory-ground examples in good condition are increasingly difficult to source. This is a current weaving on the same loom, in the same fibre, to the same drawing logic. The carpet appreciates with use rather than depreciating, which is the structural argument for its price.

The piece in a room

6' x 9' (183 x 274 cm) holds a primary seating area or a six-seat dining table. The ivory ground opens up small rooms, throws warm interior light back into mid-tone walls, and pairs cleanly with walnut, brass, and unframed canvas. The carpet does not enjoy direct competition from heavily patterned upholstery, which flattens the medallion.

Conservation

Vacuum weekly, suction only, beater bar off. Rotate end-to-end at the change of seasons. Blot spills with cotton, never rub. A wool conservator should wash the rug every five to seven years. With this care the carpet runs eighty years.
