The wool is fine-micron New Zealand fleece, the long staple chosen because it spins to a smooth, even yarn that takes vegetable colour without the patchiness that lower-grade fibre produces. Dye work followed the slow vegetable method passed down through generations of dye masters: madder root for the reds, fermented indigo for the blues, oak gall and walnut for the brown family.

The composition runs in black across the field with corner work that turns the eye back inward. The dye registers will move with light and traffic. A vegetable-dyed pile is not a finished surface; it is a starting point that the next twenty years complete.
