The Beni Ourain confederation of seventeen Berber tribes wove the carpets of the Middle Atlas mountains for centuries before the form entered the European design vocabulary in the 1920s through Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand, who hung them on the walls of their Paris apartments. The Beni motif is austere by Moroccan standards. Undyed sheep wool ground, dark hand-spun lines arranged in a loose diamond grid, no border. The grammar is so minimal that the rug reads simultaneously as ancient and as the most contemporary thing in any modern room.
This 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) piece took four weavers around six months to complete. Thick, hand-spun ivory wool on a cotton foundation, knotted at low density to preserve the long shaggy pile that gives Beni-style rugs their volume. The dark lines are charcoal-coloured wool worked in by hand row-by-row rather than printed or applied later. Around 7 mm of pile under foot.
The composition
An open beige field, irregular and slightly variegated because the wool was hand-spun rather than machine-spun. Charcoal lines in a soft diamond grid laid across the surface without strict symmetry, which is what reads as authentic against factory imitations. The grid is not centred. It runs slightly off, the way it would have on a tribal loom worked from memory rather than from a cartoon. The neutrality of the palette makes the rug a ground rather than a focal point.
What you are buying
Authentic vintage Beni Ourain carpets of this scale, when they appear at Christie's or Wright in Chicago, sit between $7,000 and $15,000 depending on age and condition. This is a new weaving in the same lineage, on the same kind of upright loom, in the same hand-spun fibre. The rug appreciates with use as the wool's lanolin works to the surface and the diamonds soften. There is no equivalent object that improves with foot traffic at any other price tier.
The piece in a room
9' x 12' is the canonical large-living-room scale. The rug expects a sectional sofa or a sofa-and-two-chair arrangement entirely on its surface. Walls in plaster white, lime-wash, or pale clay. Walnut furniture, blackened steel, woven jute. Direct light brings the warmth out of the wool. The Beni does not compete with surrounding objects, which is its point. It anchors a room in the way a sisal floor would, but with the give and warmth that only thick wool provides.
Conservation
Rotate the rug a half turn each spring and autumn so traffic distributes evenly. Vacuum weekly with suction only, no beater bar, especially with this length of pile. Shake the rug out twice a year if the size permits. A wool-trained hand wash every five years will lift dust from the deep pile. With this care, the Beni Ourain runs sixty to eighty years.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
