Mallora MLR-5 Wool Handmade Carpet

Modern carpet design as a discipline came out of the Bauhaus textile workshop in the 1920s, where Anni Albers and Gunta Stoelzl reset what a rug could look like. The vocabulary, asymmetric grids, washed grounds, single graphic gestures, is what most contemporary studios still work from.

Two weavers and a finisher worked the rug across around six weeks. Loops of wool were pulled through a stretched canvas with a hand hook, one loop at a time, and the back was sealed to lock the loops in place. The surface is a uniform low-loop pile that reads as a single textured ground. Hand-spun wool, plant-dyed in small batches.

The composition

A multi-toned palette carries the field. The geometry holds at distance and resolves into smaller incident on approach, so the rug rewards both walking past and sitting beside. The wool was washed after weaving to settle the dye and bring the surface to a low matte sheen that catches changing light differently in the morning than in the evening. Saturation tightens in lamplight; the cooler tones lift in daylight. The piece will continue to settle into its palette across the first year of use. Photographic accuracy was never the goal; the colour the rug carries in person is warmer and more variable than any image of it can suggest.

The piece in a room

The piece sits naturally inside a primary living arrangement. The composition is sized to be read whole from a standing position at the doorway and rewards close approach in equal measure. Pairs with mid-tone walls, warm wood, brass and stone; reads cleanly against pale lime-finished plaster and against polished concrete alike.

Care

Vacuum the surface weekly on suction only. Hand-hooked loops will pull if a beater bar catches them, so keep the bar disengaged for the life of the rug. Blot spills with a clean dry cotton cloth and never rub. A professional dry clean every two to three years preserves the loop tension and the surface finish. Avoid soaking the piece; the canvas backing dries slowly and prolonged moisture will weaken the bond.
