The contemporary composition in this rug grew from a contemporary studio working in conversation with classical textile sources. The pattern is graphic without being noisy, the saturation is held in a tight band, and the field reads as one composition rather than a tile that happens to repeat.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over about 4 to 5 weeks. A team of two tufters and a finisher worked wool through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, then sealed the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The final pass was done by hand with long shears to relieve the pattern across the surface, cutting the figure proud of the ground by a couple of millimetres so the design reads from sofa distance.

The composition

The composition runs in neutral from edge to edge, the contemporary working as quiet incident across an otherwise calm surface. New Zealand wool takes colour to saturation that Indian or Chinese wool cannot match at the same depth, and the long fibre length of the New Zealand stock gives the surface a soft sheen that catches the light.

The economics

Hand-tufted wool sits between flatweave and hand-knotted on the price ladder, and at this scale it is the most economical way to bring a serious wool surface into a room without committing to the years and the budget that hand-knotting requires. The rug uses the same New Zealand wool that sits on the higher tiers; what you save is loom time, not material.

The piece in a room

At the size as listed, the rug works as a focal piece in a child's room or a study, anchoring a small seating arrangement or sitting in front of a single bed. A flexible ground for most palettes; pairs comfortably with both cool and warm rooms. The pile gives the surface a sculptural read up close while the contemporary pattern carries from across the room.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect a few weeks of light shedding while loose fibres work themselves out of the pile, after which the rug settles into its working surface. A professional dry clean every three years preserves the pile and the colour together.
