Modern carpet design as it exists today emerged in the gap left by mid-century European and American abstraction reaching back to the textile traditions of Asia for a vocabulary the painters could not invent on canvas.

The pattern was drawn over months in the studio before the file was prepared for the loom, the colour separations checked at full scale on hand-printed proofs to confirm how the geometry would read at room distance. The pattern reading shifts depending on whether the rug is taken in at distance, where the beige field reads as a single composed surface, or at close range, where the secondary tonal work and the irregular weighting of the figure work emerges as the design's actual structure.

The fibre

The pile is engineered polypropylene, the colour locked in by heat-setting during yarn extrusion. The fibre does not absorb stains, does not crush under furniture legs, and does not fade in sunlight the way pigment-treated wool gradually does. The piece sits in the part of the market built for households that need a serious decorative floor without the conservation overhead a hand-knotted carpet imposes. It does what wool does graphically, on a different maintenance contract.

The composition

The palette runs through beige, the field opening to negative space at the borders so the design breathes against the floor. The geometry holds at room distance and reveals the pattern logic only on approach. The colour family stays steady through changing daylight; heat-set yarn does not carry the directional shading that makes a wool pile read warmer or cooler from different angles.

The piece in a room

At 5' × 7'7" (152 × 231 cm) the rug carries an open-plan living area or a bedroom with the bed positioned across it so the rug shows on three sides. The pile is dense enough to feel underfoot and shallow enough that doors clear without dragging.

Care

Weekly vacuum, beater bar on or off. Spot clean with detergent and water. The fibre does not absorb stains; surface treatment lifts most household incidents. A cold machine wash handles the rest.
