Rugsville Kael Ivory Abstract Modern Carpet 5'1" x 7'6"

Abstract carpet design entered the workshop vocabulary in the mid-twentieth century, the studio designers of Scandinavia and central Europe handing painterly compositions to weavers trained on classical pattern.

The studio worked the design in graphite and ink for three to four months before approving it for production, the cartoon then translated into the digital file the loom reads as a colour-by-position grid. The pattern reading shifts depending on whether the rug is taken in at distance, where the ivory field reads as a single composed surface, or at close range, where the secondary tonal work and the irregular weighting of the figure work emerges as the design's actual structure.

The fibre

Polypropylene fibre with the colour heat-set at extrusion. Direct sun has no effect on the saturation, and the fibre's surface tension means liquids bead and lift before they bond. The pile sits at a density that suits both bare feet and chair legs. This tier exists because not every floor in a house can absorb the cost of a hand-knotted piece, and the rooms that take the most traffic are usually the rooms that least suit one. The construction was developed for those rooms specifically.

The composition

A field of ivory cut by lighter channels of negative space. The pattern is not a repeat tile but a single composed surface, the densities tightening at the centre and opening at the edges so the eye reads the rug as one considered object. Pairs cleanly with walnut, brass, leather, and warm timber.

The piece in a room

5'1" × 7'6" (155 × 229 cm) sits across a living room or a primary bedroom with the bed turned across it. The synthetic surface is built for households with children, pets, and the spilled glass of red wine on a Friday night, the kind of household that cannot afford to put a wool piece in the same position. Care

Weekly vacuum, beater bar on or off. Spot clean with detergent and water. The fibre does not absorb stains; surface treatment lifts most household incidents. A cold machine wash handles the rest.
