Natural earth tones this saturated only comes from over-dyeing wool in two baths rather than dipping it once, the way a glaze sits over an undercoat in oil paint. The technique is slower; the colour does not flatten under interior light. The yarn is set in the first dye lot, then taken back into a second bath that closes the tone and locks the depth.

A pair of tufters worked this rug for three to four weeks in India, a finisher took it through the shearing and binding stage. Wool over cotton canvas, latex-bonded, scrim-backed in the conventional way for tufted carpets. The binding tape on the perimeter was applied last, by hand, so the edges sit flat against the floor without curling.

The composition

Natural earth tones carries the field. The shearing relieves the secondary tones above the ground by a couple of millimetres, which is what makes the design read at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. Undyed wool gains contrast over the years rather than dulling. The piece reads cleanly under both warm and cool lighting; the wool itself is the source of the depth, not a printed surface treatment.

Care

Vacuum weekly, beater bar off. Blot accidents with clean cotton cloth and water; avoid soaking the latex back. Light shedding is expected during the break-in period and resolves once the loose fibres have worked themselves out. Plan a professional dry clean every three years to keep the pile lifted and the colour clean. Rotate the rug end to end annually so wear and light age the surface evenly.
