Rugsville Hendrix Multi Graphic Persian Carpet 5'3" x 7'10"

The classical Persian carpet vocabulary was codified across the long Safavid and Qajar centuries in workshops from Tabriz to Kerman, the medallion and arabesque patterns that the European interior absorbed beginning in the seventeenth century. The piece in front of you carries that vocabulary into a neutral register.

The pattern was drawn over months in the studio before the file was prepared for the loom, the colour separations checked at full scale on hand-printed proofs to confirm how the geometry would read at room distance. The geometry is deliberately asymmetric so the rug does not impose a fixed orientation on the room. Either long edge can face the seating, either short edge can face the entrance, and the multi-tone reads consistently in all four orientations.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene as the working fibre. The colour is set into the yarn at the moment of extrusion under temperature, which is why direct sunlight does not bleach the saturation over years and why most household spills lift with a damp cloth. The piece is built to absorb the kinds of incidents a hand-knotted rug cannot, in the rooms a hand-knotted rug should not be put. The design language carries through; the maintenance demands do not.

The composition

A composition built around the interaction of multi-tone, with secondary tones in lighter and darker registers separating the motifs. The geometry is designed to read at distance as a coherent ground and on approach as a layered pattern. Pairs with walnut, brass, leather, linen, and warm timber floors; pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, the rug expects to be the only graphic element in the composition.

The piece in a room

5'3" × 7'10" (160 × 239 cm) is the working scale for living rooms in flats, dining areas under a six-seater table, primary bedrooms, and corridors with foot traffic the wool tier would not survive. The multi-tone reads at distance and reveals the pattern detail on approach. Position the front legs of the seating onto the rug and leave a perimeter of bare floor as a frame.

Care

Vacuum weekly. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cloth. Machine wash on a cold 30°C cycle if a spill resists spot cleaning, then air dry flat. No professional cleaning required at any point in the working life of the rug.
