Rugsville Grecia Ivory Oriental Persian Carpet 5'3" x 7'9"

The classical Persian carpet vocabulary was codified across the long Safavid and Qajar centuries in workshops from Tabriz to Kerman, the medallion and arabesque patterns that the European interior absorbed beginning in the seventeenth century. The contemporary edit in neutral keeps the form moving forward.

The piece comes out of a contemporary studio practice that draws on the long workshop conversation between Turkish and Indian carpet design and the post-war Scandinavian and central-European abstraction that pulled this vocabulary into the modernist interior. The drawing carries the slow, considered quality of studio work rather than the algorithmic regularity of pattern generated by software. The composition was settled by eye against a full-scale paper proof before the file went to production.

The fibre

Heat-set polypropylene as the working fibre. The colour is set into the yarn at the moment of extrusion under temperature, which is why direct sunlight does not bleach the saturation over years and why most household spills lift with a damp cloth. The piece sits in the part of the market built for households that need a serious decorative floor without the conservation overhead a hand-knotted carpet imposes. It does what wool does graphically, on a different maintenance contract.

The composition

A composition built around the interaction of ivory, with secondary tones in lighter and darker registers separating the motifs. The geometry is designed to read at distance as a coherent ground and on approach as a layered pattern. Pairs with walnut, brass, leather, linen, and warm timber floors; pairs less well with strongly patterned upholstery, the rug expects to be the only graphic element in the composition.

5'3" × 7'9" (160 × 236 cm) suits a hallway, a study, a sitting area in a larger flat, or a dining footprint. The ivory answers both painted and exposed brick walls, and the heat-set fibre absorbs the chair-leg movement under a dining table without crushing.

Care

Vacuum weekly. Spot clean with mild detergent on a clean cloth. Machine wash on a cold 30°C cycle if a spill resists spot cleaning, then air dry flat. No professional cleaning required at any point in the working life of the rug.
