Diamond Radiant Grey Handmade Wool Carpet 9' x 12'

Diamond and chevron geometry has been the spine of modern Indian rug design since the 1970s, when Le Corbusier's Chandigarh furniture and the Scandinavian rya tradition pushed studios away from floral medallion and toward the sharp graphic of intersecting lines. The Radiant reading of that grammar pulls the chevron tight enough to read as facet, then runs the whole field across the 9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) drawing-room scale.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over eight weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas with a tufting gun in graduated rows, the chevron geometry laid out by hand chalk before the first knot. The back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim. Long shears were drawn across the front by hand to even the pile and to lift the diamond facets a millimetre proud of the surrounding ground. The rug was washed twice after carving and sun-dried flat.

The composition

Three values of grey, separated by lighter channels of negative space, work as intersecting chevrons that read as snowflake at distance and as facet on approach. The grey was over-dyed in two baths so the wool carries a faint blue shift at certain angles, the way a glaze sits over an undercoat in oil paint. The composition has no single focal point and the eye travels across the field rather than landing in one place. The rug grounds the room without claiming ownership of it.

The piece in a room

9' x 12' (274 x 366 cm) suits a primary living area with a long sectional, a ten-seat dining floor, or the master suite of a four-bedroom flat. The grey palette pairs with walnut, raw oak, brushed steel, brass, and white plaster, and reads well under abstract canvas, architectural photography, and minimalist sculpture. The rug expects to be the only graphic element in the composition.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged so the wool stays seated in the cotton canvas. Every hand-tufted rug sheds for the first six to eight weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub at the pile. A professional dry clean every three years lifts settled dust and keeps the grey from flattening. The rug holds its hand for fifteen years and beyond.
