Diamond Radiant Grey Handmade Wool Carpet 6' x 9'

Hand-tufting brings the painter's logic to the loom. A cartoon is drawn at full scale, the wool is pushed through stretched canvas with a hand-held tool, and the relief between motif and ground is cut by hand at the very end. The composition in this rug is built that way.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over five weeks by 2 tufters and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and then trimmed by hand with long shears. The relief cut between figure and field is what makes the pattern read at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The cartoon was drawn at full size before any wool was loaded, and the colour was selected from yarn skeins matched against the original studio drawing under daylight.

The composition

A composition organised around grey, supported by a small palette of quieter values. The wool is dense enough to take wear in a primary room and the surface holds its drawing under furniture and foot traffic. The hand-cut relief between motif and field reads at distance and rewards a close look at the textures that machine production cannot replicate. The piece settles into the floor over the first months of use.

The piece in a room

6' × 9' (183 × 274 cm). The piece sits well at the centre of a drawing room, with the seating pulled into a single conversation cluster on the field. The drawing extends past the seating on every side so the composition reads as a complete work. The grey field works against walnut and oak floors, with linen and leather upholstery, and with both painted and limewashed walls.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile, after which the body of the rug stays dense and stable. Professional dry clean every two to three years to restore the lift of the wool.
