The hand-tufted process belongs to the workshop tradition that translates a studio drawing into wool at full architectural scale. A canvas is stretched on a frame, the cartoon is transferred to it, and the colour is laid down strand by strand with a tufting gun. The pattern in front of you was made in that discipline.
The rug was hand-tufted in India over three weeks by 1 tufter and a finisher. Wool was pushed through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, sealed at the back with natural latex and a cotton scrim, and then trimmed by hand with long shears. The relief cut between figure and field is what makes the pattern read at room scale rather than dissolving into noise. The cartoon was drawn at full size before any wool was loaded, and the colour was selected from yarn skeins matched against the original studio drawing under daylight.
The composition
Grey carries the field. The drawing reads clearly because the contrast between motif and ground was cut into the pile by hand after tufting. The wool sheds slightly for the first weeks of use, which is normal and stops once loose fibres have worked themselves out. The dye sits in the fibre rather than on it, which means the surface will settle into the long, soft register that wool always reaches with use rather than fading the way printed surfaces fade.
The piece in a room
3' × 5' (91 × 152 cm). The format anchors a primary bedroom, with the bed centred over the rug and the side tables sitting on the field rather than off it. The drawing extends past the foot of the bed by enough to register as a complete composition. The grey field works against walnut and oak floors, with linen and leather upholstery, and with both painted and limewashed walls.
Care
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every tufted rug loses fibre to a beater bar regardless of price. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth, never rub. Expect light shedding for the first six weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile, after which the body of the rug stays dense and stable. Professional dry clean every two to three years to restore the lift of the wool.

Day-to-day care
- Vacuum gently once a week without a rotating brush bar — use the suction-only setting on hand-knotted or hand-tufted pieces.
- Rotate the rug 180° every 3-6 months so foot traffic and sunlight wear is even.
- Use a quality rug pad underneath for slip resistance and to extend life.
- Blot fresh spills immediately with a clean white cloth — do not rub. Work from the edge of the spill inward.
Deep cleaning
- Professional dry-cleaning is recommended every 12-24 months for hand-knotted carpets.
- Avoid steam cleaners and hot water on natural-fibre rugs (wool, silk, jute) — they can cause shrinkage and dye bleeding.
- For washable flat-weaves and cotton dhurries, machine-wash on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag.
Storage
- Roll (do not fold) the carpet around a clean cardboard tube, pile-side in.
- Wrap in breathable cotton sheeting (not plastic) and store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space.
- Use moth-protection sachets if storing wool for more than a season.

Frequently asked
How long will shipping take?
Most metros (Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata) receive their order in 3-5 business days. Tier-2 cities take 5-7 business days, and remote pin codes (J&K, North-East, Andamans) take 7-10 business days. Use the pin-code checker above for a concrete delivery date.
Will the colour exactly match the photo?
Each carpet is hand-crafted with natural-dye yarns, so a small variation in shade, pattern density, and tone is expected and is part of the authenticity of a handmade piece. Colours on screen also vary by monitor and lighting. If you are matching a specific decor, request a yarn sample before ordering.
Can I get a sample before buying?
Yes — we send 2-3 small yarn / pile samples for ₹500 (refundable against your purchase). Message us on WhatsApp with the SKU and your shipping pin code to arrange a sample.
What is your returns process?
Returns are accepted within 7 days of delivery in original condition (rolled, not folded; no pet hair, smoke, or stains). Email care@rugsville.in or message us on WhatsApp with your order number — we arrange free reverse pickup in most pin codes. Refunds are processed within 3-5 working days of receipt at our warehouse.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes. Custom-size, custom-colour, and custom-design hand-knotted carpets typically take 4-8 weeks depending on size and complexity. Minimum custom-order size is 4'×6'. Send us your brief on WhatsApp with the room photo and dimensions for a quote.
Is Cash on Delivery (COD) available?
COD is available for most pin codes in zones A and B (metros and tier-2 cities). Some remote pin codes are prepaid only — the pin-code checker above will tell you immediately.
