Anatito Anati10 Charcoal Wool Handmade Carpet 9'9" x 12'6"

Charcoal as a ground colour in tribal weaving was historically rare, since the dye baths needed a long iron-mordant soak that nomadic weavers preferred to skip. Studio Anatolian work brought charcoal into the vocabulary in the late twentieth century, where its restraint became the perfect carrier for a softened pastel medallion. The Anati10 charcoal reading of the tradition takes that pairing into the 9'9" x 12'6" (297 x 381 cm) drawing-room scale.

The rug was hand-tufted in India over eight weeks by two tufters and a finisher. Wool went through a stretched cotton canvas one row at a time with a tufting gun, the charcoal field laid first and the medallion worked into the centre. The back was sealed with natural latex and a cotton scrim. The medallion was carved a fraction below the field by hand with long shears, so the silhouette holds a soft relief under raking light. The rug was washed twice after carving and sun-dried flat.

The composition

A deep charcoal field carries a pale medallion in rose, baby blue, and ivory, framed by an ornamental border of vine and dot motifs. The pastel medallion reads warm against the cool ground in a way that flatters skin tones in the room and pulls reflected light off plaster walls. The charcoal is uneven by design, with abrash bands shifting between black and slate. The composition holds at the full scale of a long room.

Care

Vacuum weekly with the beater bar disengaged. Every hand-tufted rug sheds for the first six to eight weeks of use as loose fibres work themselves out of the pile. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth and never rub. A professional dry clean every three years lifts settled dust and keeps the charcoal from going flat. The rug holds its hand for fifteen years and beyond.
