The pattern in front of you draws from the long workshop conversation between the Anatolian, Persian, and Indian carpet traditions, a vocabulary that has been refined and re-edited every generation. The neutral reading is the contemporary edit.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the piece over 3 weeks, the design transferred to canvas first as a full-scale cartoon and then worked through the surface row by row. Wool yarn was driven through a stretched primary canvas by a hand-held tufting gun, the cartoon transferred to the back of the canvas as a guide. After the colour passes were complete the back received a natural latex coat and a cotton scrim laminate to anchor every loop. The carving step took a finisher about a week with hand shears, cutting the pattern into a low relief that pulls a millimetre or two of shadow into every motif edge. The piece behaves differently in lamp light than in north light.

The composition

A saturated blue field with figure work in tonal contrast, the kind of pairing that holds a room together without dominating it. The wool catches light along the cut pile and absorbs it across the carved relief, so the surface reads as two different materials depending on the angle.

The piece in a room

3'3" × 5' (99 × 152 cm) anchors a primary bedroom, a medium living room, or a sitting area in a larger flat. The blue pairs cleanly with walnut, oak, teak, and warm stone floors and answers both white and mid-tone walls. Position the front legs of seating onto the field and leave a frame of bare floor around the perimeter so the rug reads as a defined object rather than as wall-to-wall coverage.

Care

Suction-only vacuuming weekly. Beater bars pull at the tufted base and shorten the working life of the rug. Blot spills immediately with clean cotton, never with paper towel which leaves fibre behind. Expect six weeks of light shedding from new as the loose ends of the cut pile work themselves clear. A professional dry clean every three years keeps the surface from compacting.
