Summer SUM-8 Modern Wool Handmade Carpet

The pattern in this rug came out of a contemporary design studio working with traditional Indian colour theory in modern geometry. The drawing took weeks before a single thread of wool reached the canvas; the construction is built to honour that drawing. The result sits in the lineage of mid-century textile work without quoting any single source directly.

Two tufters and a finisher worked the rug over 4 weeks in India. The wool was gun-tufted into a stretched cotton primary backing, then sealed at the reverse with natural latex and bonded to a cotton scrim. The pile was sheared by hand with long blades to bring the polychrome field to a uniform plane, and a final pass with shears carved the motif a few millimetres clear of the ground so the pattern reads in relief at room scale.

The composition

A polychrome ground carries an abstract motif drawn in tonal contrast. The pattern is built to read as architecture rather than ornament. The eye crosses the field rather than landing in a single place.

The piece in a room

The rug suits a primary bedroom under the foot of the bed and the bedside passage, a sitting room arranged around a low coffee table, or a study floor under a single armchair and reading lamp. A polychrome field anchors a room with otherwise restrained palette. Walnut and oak flooring both suit the polychrome register; lime-washed walls deepen the read.

Care

Disengage the beater bar before vacuuming. Tufted construction is dense but the pile is held by latex rather than tied knots, so aggressive agitation is the one thing to avoid across the rug's life. Spot clean with a cotton cloth and cool water for fresh spills; professional cleaning every three to four years handles ground-in soil. Rotate a quarter turn each season so foot traffic and light age the surface evenly.
