The 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) carpet was woven in India by three weavers across approximately four months in the traditional overdye sequence. The base was a previously knotted Ziegler-tradition wool carpet on a cotton foundation, washed and sheared to a uniform low pile, then submerged in a single immersion bath of mid grey dye. The aged wool absorbed the grey at slightly varying intensities depending on the under-drawing, producing a quiet confident field with the architectural pattern of the original carpet visible as a soft chromatic ghost beneath the new wash.

The composition

A clean mid grey across the entire field, with the original Ziegler-tradition vine and palmette pattern surfacing as a slightly deeper grey under-drawing. The carpet reads at distance as a single tonal field and at close range as a layered textile object with two distinct chromatic events present at the same time. Surface variation in the hand-spun wool keeps the grey alive under interior light. The colour will settle further into the fibre across the next decade.

Conservation

Rotate the carpet a half turn each spring. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot any spill with a clean dry cotton cloth from the outside in.
