Description / Rugsville Kazak Navy Red Wool Carpet 16504 Carpet
Navy and red on a Kazak is a comparatively rare colourway. Most Caucasian village production from the nineteenth century leans on madder red and ivory, with indigo used sparingly as accent. A field where indigo and madder share top billing comes out of a narrower band of Armenian and Karabagh workshops, which gives the design a slightly more architectural quality, with the indigo holding the geometry together where ivory would have softened it.
The carpet was hand-knotted in India over roughly four months by three weavers. Wool was hand-spun on a charkha, dyed in copper vats of indigo and madder, and lowered into the dye over multiple immersions to build the depth that synthetic baths cannot reproduce. Knot count sits in the 100 to 130 per square inch range using the Turkish symmetric knot, on a cotton warp and weft. The fringes are integral to the warps, finished with a hand-tied overhand knot.
The composition
A field of deep navy carries three red medallions running along the long axis, hooked and serrated in the Caucasian manner. Smaller filler ornaments break the negative space around each medallion. The border alternates ivory and red reciprocal trefoils. Indigo at this saturation reads almost black under low light and lifts to a true blue in daylight, which gives the rug two distinct moods depending on the room's lighting.
What you are buying
A new hand-knotted Caucasian-revival Kazak in vegetable-dyed wool on cotton at 8' x 10' (244 x 305 cm) is offered here at a fraction of what comparable antique work commands at international auction, where prices for late-nineteenth-century examples in similar condition routinely run between $9,000 and $22,000. The piece is built to outlive the room it was bought for and gains depth of colour rather than losing it across the first twenty years.
The piece in a room
The 8' x 10' format anchors a substantial sitting room or holds the floor of a primary bedroom under a king bed. Navy and red work against pale plaster walls, mid-tone wood floors, and unbleached linen upholstery. The rug pairs especially well with cognac leather, oiled brass, and any wood with a warm grain. Keep curtains and cushions in solid colours; the Kazak provides all the pattern needed.
Conservation
Vacuum weekly with the beater bar lifted off. Rotate end to end every six months. Indigo will bleed if the rug is wet-cleaned at home, so any spill should be blotted dry with white cotton and any deeper stain referred to a wool conservator. Plan a professional hand wash every five years.

Auspicious Placement
Vastu Guidance
Traditional Vastu Shastra recommendations for placing this carpet in your home. Choose based on the room and the corner you wish to ground.
Recommended direction: South-west (stability), or under the seating in the West / North-west.
Earth-tone carpets (red, ochre, terracotta, brown) in the South-west bring stability and grounding energy. Avoid covering the central Brahmasthan (centre) of the room; leave a small bare floor space.
Recommended direction: South-west or West side of the bed.
Soft pastels (cream, dusty rose, sage, blue-grey) work well in bedrooms for restful energy. Avoid bright reds at the head of the bed. Place the carpet so it extends 18–24 inches on each side of the bed.
Recommended direction: West or North-west zone.
Place carpet under the dining table such that all chairs sit on it when pulled out. Earth tones (terracotta, ochre, beige) and floral patterns are auspicious. Avoid black or dark blue under the dining area per Vastu.
Recommended direction: North-east corner of the home or the pooja room itself.
Auspicious colours: maroon, deep red, saffron, ivory, gold-yellow. Wool naturally resists fire risk near diya lamps. Use a small 2'×3' or 3'×5' size — larger carpets are not traditional in pooja spaces. Sit facing East or North while praying.
Recommended direction: Just inside the main door (East or North-facing entrance is ideal).
A small 3'×5' carpet at the entrance brings welcoming energy. Choose warm tones (red, ochre, gold). The carpet should be in good condition — frayed or stained welcome mats are considered inauspicious.
