Description / Gabbeh Melange Green Modern Solid Hand Knotted Wool Carpet 3' X 5'

Melange in wool is a colour technique borrowed from the worsted suiting trade, where two slightly different dye lots are blended at the spinning stage so the final yarn reads as a single colour at distance and as a fine variegation on close inspection. Applied to a Gabbeh field in green, the result is a calm tonal surface that does not flatten the way a single dye lot does. The piece carries depth without pattern.

One weaver worked this 3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) rug across roughly three months in India. Wool was hand-spun in melange across two green tones, mid sage and a softer olive, then knotted in the Persian asymmetric knot on a cotton foundation. The pile was kept long in the Gabbeh tradition, and the rug was washed twice after the loom came down to open the hand and let the melange settle.

The composition

A solid green field built from melange wool, with the two tones carrying the surface as a slow tonal weather rather than a stripe. A simple plain border in matching green closes the field. There are no other figures. The colour will deepen as the wool oxidises with light, settling into a richer green over the first three to five years on the floor. The melange holds its character through ageing.

What you are buying

Solid hand-knotted wool rugs in deep saturation sell in the European market at three to four times this figure for comparable construction. This is by-hand work, on a vertical loom, on a cotton foundation, in hand-spun wool, at an entry price into collectible weaving. The hand-knotted piece appreciates with use rather than losing value as a tufted or machine equivalent would.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) sits at the foot of a bed, beside a reading chair, or in a pooja or mandir corner. The green field works against teak, walnut, brass, and white plaster, and reads especially well against natural linen and raw cotton upholstery. Brass lamps warm the green; cool light pushes it toward sage.

Conservation

Rotate end for end every six months. Vacuum weekly with the beater bar off. Blot spills with a clean cotton cloth at the moment of incident. A specialist wool hand wash every five to seven years keeps the long pile open and the melange honest. The piece serves two generations of careful use.

Auspicious Placement

Vastu Guidance

Traditional Vastu Shastra recommendations for placing this carpet in your home. Choose based on the room and the corner you wish to ground.

Recommended direction: South-west (stability), or under the seating in the West / North-west.

Earth-tone carpets (red, ochre, terracotta, brown) in the South-west bring stability and grounding energy. Avoid covering the central Brahmasthan (centre) of the room; leave a small bare floor space.

Recommended direction: South-west or West side of the bed.

Soft pastels (cream, dusty rose, sage, blue-grey) work well in bedrooms for restful energy. Avoid bright reds at the head of the bed. Place the carpet so it extends 18–24 inches on each side of the bed.

Recommended direction: West or North-west zone.

Place carpet under the dining table such that all chairs sit on it when pulled out. Earth tones (terracotta, ochre, beige) and floral patterns are auspicious. Avoid black or dark blue under the dining area per Vastu.

Recommended direction: North-east corner of the home or the pooja room itself.

Auspicious colours: maroon, deep red, saffron, ivory, gold-yellow. Wool naturally resists fire risk near diya lamps. Use a small 2'×3' or 3'×5' size — larger carpets are not traditional in pooja spaces. Sit facing East or North while praying.

Recommended direction: Just inside the main door (East or North-facing entrance is ideal).

A small 3'×5' carpet at the entrance brings welcoming energy. Choose warm tones (red, ochre, gold). The carpet should be in good condition — frayed or stained welcome mats are considered inauspicious.

Vastu guidance is traditional and may vary by region and family practice. Consult a Vastu expert for personalised advice.
