Description / Camilla Persian Beige Red Wool Hand Knotted Carpet 3' X 5'

Persian rug-making in the classical sense organises a carpet around a central medallion drawn in the workshop tradition of the late Safavid period. The Camilla draws on that lineage. A central medallion in muted red over a beige field, with the corner spandrels echoing the medallion's geometry, and a layered border drawn in restrained contrast. The drawing was set on graph paper before it was committed to the loom.

One senior weaver tied this 3' x 5' hand-knotted carpet alone in India over roughly three months. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, dyed in small batches and balanced against a master cartoon. At this scale a single weaver carries the whole drawing, which is what gives small Persian-idiom carpets their consistency of hand. The knots were tied against a vertical beam and beaten down with a metal comb after each row.

The composition

A muted red medallion at the centre of a beige field, with corner spandrels in matching red and a triple-band border in deeper red and ivory. The drawing carries the floral vocabulary of the classical Persian medallion idiom in restrained scale. With age the red will mellow toward terracotta and the beige will warm toward stone. The contrast is set high enough at the start to absorb a decade of natural softening.

What you are buying

A small hand-knotted Persian-idiom carpet at this density and fibre quality is comparable in labour to a small antique piece. The rug appreciates with use rather than depreciating; the wool patinas, the drawing settles, and the colour relationships open up over the first ten years. As an entry into hand-knotted collecting, the piece offers the same craft as a much larger investment at a smaller scale.

The piece in a room

3' x 5' (91 x 152 cm) suits a pooja room, a mandir, the side of a bed, an entry, or a small study. The beige and red palette pairs with brass, walnut, marble, and warm white walls. In a traditional Indian interior the rug reads as quiet ornament under a low seat or beside a deity; in a modern flat it is a small, considered colour event in an otherwise neutral floor.

Conservation

Rotate twice a year. Vacuum on suction, weekly, beater bar off. Blot any spill immediately with a clean cotton cloth. Small carpets in pooja rooms see oil-lamp residue over time; specialist hand-wash every five years addresses this without harming the wool or dye. With this care the rug runs sixty years and is still legible at the end of it.

Auspicious Placement

Vastu Guidance

Traditional Vastu Shastra recommendations for placing this carpet in your home. Choose based on the room and the corner you wish to ground.

Recommended direction: South-west (stability), or under the seating in the West / North-west.

Earth-tone carpets (red, ochre, terracotta, brown) in the South-west bring stability and grounding energy. Avoid covering the central Brahmasthan (centre) of the room; leave a small bare floor space.

Recommended direction: South-west or West side of the bed.

Soft pastels (cream, dusty rose, sage, blue-grey) work well in bedrooms for restful energy. Avoid bright reds at the head of the bed. Place the carpet so it extends 18–24 inches on each side of the bed.

Recommended direction: West or North-west zone.

Place carpet under the dining table such that all chairs sit on it when pulled out. Earth tones (terracotta, ochre, beige) and floral patterns are auspicious. Avoid black or dark blue under the dining area per Vastu.

Recommended direction: North-east corner of the home or the pooja room itself.

Auspicious colours: maroon, deep red, saffron, ivory, gold-yellow. Wool naturally resists fire risk near diya lamps. Use a small 2'×3' or 3'×5' size — larger carpets are not traditional in pooja spaces. Sit facing East or North while praying.

Recommended direction: Just inside the main door (East or North-facing entrance is ideal).

A small 3'×5' carpet at the entrance brings welcoming energy. Choose warm tones (red, ochre, gold). The carpet should be in good condition — frayed or stained welcome mats are considered inauspicious.

Vastu guidance is traditional and may vary by region and family practice. Consult a Vastu expert for personalised advice.
