Description / Summer SUM19 Modern Star Multi Wool Handmade Carpet

The motif vocabulary of this collection comes out of contemporary Indian design studios working with mid-century European geometry as their reference set. The lines are graphic, the colour blocks are clean, the construction is engineered to keep production time inside two months without compromising on the wool weight or the pile density. A drawing takes weeks before it ever reaches the loom.

Construction took 4 weeks for two tufters and a finisher. After the pile was set, the back was coated with natural latex to lock the tufts and bonded to a cotton scrim. The face was carved by hand to relieve the polychrome pattern from the field by two millimetres. The wool was sourced from Indian highland flocks, hand-spun into a four-ply yarn, and dyed in copper vats before reaching the tufting frame.

The composition

The composition reads as a single quiet drawing in polychrome. The motif emerges as a relief rather than as a hard line, which is the result of carving the pile by hand after the tufting was set.

The piece in a room

The piece sits well in a primary bedroom under a queen frame, in a study beneath a writing table, or as the central field of a medium living room. A polychrome field anchors a room with otherwise restrained palette. Pair with linen upholstery, oak or walnut flooring, and lighting that runs warm rather than cool; the wool reads at its truest colour under incandescent and warm LED light.

Care

Disengage the beater bar before vacuuming. Tufted construction is dense but the pile is held by latex rather than tied knots, so aggressive agitation is the one thing to avoid across the rug's life. Spot clean with a cotton cloth and cool water for fresh spills; professional cleaning every three to four years handles ground-in soil. Rotate a quarter turn each season so foot traffic and light age the surface evenly.

Auspicious Placement

Vastu Guidance

Traditional Vastu Shastra recommendations for placing this carpet in your home. Choose based on the room and the corner you wish to ground.

Recommended direction: South-west (stability), or under the seating in the West / North-west.

Earth-tone carpets (red, ochre, terracotta, brown) in the South-west bring stability and grounding energy. Avoid covering the central Brahmasthan (centre) of the room; leave a small bare floor space.

Recommended direction: South-west or West side of the bed.

Soft pastels (cream, dusty rose, sage, blue-grey) work well in bedrooms for restful energy. Avoid bright reds at the head of the bed. Place the carpet so it extends 18–24 inches on each side of the bed.

Recommended direction: West or North-west zone.

Place carpet under the dining table such that all chairs sit on it when pulled out. Earth tones (terracotta, ochre, beige) and floral patterns are auspicious. Avoid black or dark blue under the dining area per Vastu.

Recommended direction: North-east corner of the home or the pooja room itself.

Auspicious colours: maroon, deep red, saffron, ivory, gold-yellow. Wool naturally resists fire risk near diya lamps. Use a small 2'×3' or 3'×5' size — larger carpets are not traditional in pooja spaces. Sit facing East or North while praying.

Recommended direction: Just inside the main door (East or North-facing entrance is ideal).

A small 3'×5' carpet at the entrance brings welcoming energy. Choose warm tones (red, ochre, gold). The carpet should be in good condition — frayed or stained welcome mats are considered inauspicious.

Vastu guidance is traditional and may vary by region and family practice. Consult a Vastu expert for personalised advice.
